The Bird Whisperer by litanyburns

I’m sitting in the park beside a river, eating a salad and enjoying a magnificent sunset on a rather warm January evening. Floating on the water, a good distance away, are seagulls and ducks, going about their early evening ablutions certainly not paying any attention to myself and another person as we continue to eat our salads and talk. In the course of our conversation I quietly say to him, “They put bacon in this salad. I wonder if the seagulls will eat bacon?” At that very instant, as if they heard my words, the seagulls immediately take flight, all ten or twelve of them, and begin circling overhead- a few birds planting themselves near my picnic table. The ducks begin frenetically paddling down river toward me, until we are surrounded by a wild frenzy of feathered friends converging on us. I have not even lifted a shred of shredded bacon in their direction…

A bit unnerved by their eavesdropping, I say to them out loud, “Calm down, alright? Just calm down.” They slowly stop circling and all the ducks and seagulls now patiently stand in the grass near the picnic table where we sit. Not to disappoint, I tossed them the bacon and the remains of my salad before leaving, while they happily munched away.
